Article history: Received 21 October 2014 Revised 28 October 2014 Accepted 29 October 2014 Available online 23 January 2015 In this study, ultraviolet (UV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis were investigated for the pre-treatment and post-treatment of coking wastewater. First, 6-fold diluted raw coking wastewater was irradiated by UV and VUV. It was found that 15.9%–35.4% total organic carbon (TOC) was removed after 24 hr irradiation. The irradiated effluent could be degraded by the acclimated activated sludge. Even though the VUV photolysis removed more chemical oxygen demand (COD) than UV, the UV-irradiated effluent demonstrated better biodegradability. After 4 hr UV irradiation, the biological oxygen demand BOD5/COD ratio of irradiated coking wastewater increased from 0.163 to 0.224, and its toxicity decreased to the greatest extent. Second, the biologically treated coking wastewater was irradiated by UV and VUV. Both of them were able to remove 37%–47% TOC within 8 hr irradiation. Compared to UV, VUV photolysis could significantly improve the transparency of the bio-treated effluent. VUV also reduced 7% more ammonia nitrogen (NH4–N), 17% more nitrite nitrogen (NO2–N), and 18% more total nitrogen (TN) than UV, producing 35% less nitrite nitrogen (NO3–N) as a result. In conclusion, UV irradiation was better in improving the biodegradability of coking wastewater, while VUV was more effective at photolyzing the residual organic compounds and inorganic N-species in the bio-treated effluent. © 2015 The Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Individual particle analysis of aerosols collected at Lhasa City in the Tibetan Plateau.
To understand the composition and major sources of aerosol particles in Lhasa City on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), individual particles were collected from 2 February to 8 March, 2013 in Tibet University. The mean concentrations of both PM2.5 and PM10 during the sampling were 25.7±21.7 and 57.2±46.7 μg/m3, respectively, much lower than those of other cities in East and South Asia, but higher than ...
متن کاملAccelerated Urban Expansion in Lhasa City and the Implications for Sustainable Development in a Plateau City
Urbanization challenges regional sustainable development, but a slight expansion mechanism was revealed in a plateau city. We have integrated the urban expansion process and analyzed its determinants in Lhasa (Tibet), and we provide insightful suggestions for urban management and planning for Lhasa. The full continuum of the urban expansion process has been captured using time-series of high-re...
متن کاملAn epidemiological survey of stroke in Lhasa, Tibet, China.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE There have not been any new epidemiological studies related to stroke in Tibet for 20 years. This study aimed to collect stroke data from The City Staff Medical Insurance Registry in Lhasa, Tibet, to describe the incidence, clinical subtypes, and associated risk factors of stroke. METHODS We used retrospective, population-based descriptive analysis of all urban and rura...
متن کاملRadiative transfer in mountains: Application to the Tibetan Plateau
[1] We developed a 3D Monte Carlo photon tracing program for the transfer of radiation in inhomogeneous and irregular terrain to calculate broadband solar and thermal infrared fluxes. We selected an area of 100 100 km in the Tibetan Plateau centered at Lhasa city and used the albedo and surface temperature from MODIS/Terra for this study. We showed that anomalies of surface solar fluxes with re...
متن کاملHuman Impact on Vegetation Dynamics around Lhasa, Southern Tibetan Plateau, China
Human impact plays an increasing role on vegetation change even on the Tibetan Plateau, an area that is commonly regarded as an ideal place to study climate change. We evaluate the nature and extent of human impact on vegetation dynamics by the comparison of two areas: the relative highly populated Lhasa area and a nearby less populated Lhari County. Our results indicate that human impact has m...
